About us

Tolvskillingshjälpen was founded in 1960 at Scania Vabis in Södertälje. The initiative was taken by the designer Ragnar Andersson, together with colleagues. The idea came to Ragnar at home, in front of the TV when news about difficulties for children in Sudan was read.

The founders took contact with other companies in the Södertälje area, and there were originally 40 companies involved in the project. Tolvskillingshjälpen received a lot of attention and a type of barometer on the square in Södertälje showed how much money was collected.

How is the collection done?

Today the organisation consists of approximately 7 000 people that is contributing. Each person contributes an average of 240 SEK per year, 98% of these people are employed at various businesses where the payroll office is doing a monthly direct transaction to Tolvskillingshjälpen from the salary. The other 2% are individual members who pay via invoice.

This means that collected amount is about 1.600.000 SEK per year.

Less than 1% of the collected money goes to administration.

Political affiliation?

Tolvskillingshjälpen is free from political and religious values and is thus partisan and religiously independent.

Tolvskillingshjälpen is an economic association with a Board of nine members. The Board is elected at an annual meeting after an election committee has proposed candidates. The Board meets about five times per year. The Board's role is to review grant applications received, so that money is paid to projects that comply with our statutes and purpose.

The association's membership is currently only 20 SEK / month, which is also the most common premium. The economic evaluation is carried out by two elected auditors.

Why donate money to Tolvskillingshjälpen?

- "It is a simple way to care for children and adolescence who have a hard time. A small amount which is deducted from your account each month can help children and young people to a decent life. We think it is better to invest in a long-term project rather than just emergency relief" said Stefan Carlquist, who is the treasurer in the club.

- "Feel free to apply for money from the Tolvskillingshjälpen, if you are working with an ancillary activity or if you know someone else who does. Maybe you've heard about, or read about any ancillary activities in the newspaper that you think is praiseworthy. Submit a proposal or an application to the Board. All applications are treated equally. The project must be serious and have a "long-term" plan. It should also be possible to verify that the money of the projects arrive to the recipients" said Bengt Perman, the chairman of Tolvskillingshjälpen.
